Name-calling

So, last night, as Serene rightfully pointed out, was not one of our most usual of nights.

I ended up shopping most of the evening with Jo, and we looked at all things winter, in preparation for her impending visit to Paris. The interesting Chanel-lesque jacket she eventually bought was an unlikely thing for us to pick up really. But for some reason caught out eye, and it turned out to have an extremely gd fit and met all her needs. Gd buy, girl! Haven't had so much fun shopping with a girlfriend in a long time.

Then of course, conversations with Mommy Chin are always hilarious. In between her impersonating the dancers at NAFA's dance performance (which already had us in stitches), and talking about picking names for Baby Chin, Serene and Eunice stole the show - in the spirit of looking for names that go with Chin, they unofficially christened Baby Chin as Double Chin Chia Lok. That took the cake yesterday - it sent us into hysterics.

I think Double Chin Chia Lok grows on you..... *chuckle*

Kiss and make up

After a weekend worth of fighting and arguing with each other, this was my Boy's attempt to cheer me up from all that's gone on. Rather like this picture actually. =)

Friday night excursion!

Friday nights are a precious commodity. For some reason, there's this urge to spend it wisely, and preferably on things social. It is afterall Friday, where the weekend unofficially starts.

I was all ready last Friday to head down to the gym to try out a belly-dancing class I've been meaning to go for that night, when an evening work meeting stretched past its time and made it impossible for me to go.

So, abandon Plan A.

Just then, one of my curators marched over to our desk exclaiming that "Auntie" Joyce was doing her last museum tour for the year. Finally, ART EXPLAINED - How can anyone miss something like that??

So we merrily trudged down to SAM, all 3 of us with "Auntie" Joyce, proclaiming loudly as we walked how we'd be her biggest and most awe-struck fans ever. We even devised a plan to take on different personas - bimbo, tourist, Ms Know-All, etc, just to make the experience "more interesting". Our contagious enthusiasm made "Auntie" Joyce chuckle.

What struck me walking thru the galleries of works by local artists is how first-hand the information or contact with them seems - the curators literally can say "Oh, when I first met Gerogette Chen in the 80s, she was like this and this" or "I asked Iskhandar Jalil why this piece was created like this....". Its so different from visiting HUGE galleries overseas of old masterpieces from the 18th or 19th centuries, but never really sharing that "closeness" or affinity to the artist to understand what they did and why they did it. Joyce had much to share from her years working here. Its so much more real, what we have here.

We dropped by the other exhibitions in SAM as well - the Teblah Terbib one which is for the Biennale, and the Zaha Hardid (a renown London architect) collaboration to display the best of Deutsche Bank's collection. I have to admit that the Zaha Hardid exhibition intrigued me thoroughly. The use of architect within a neo-classical buildng like tt to break the lines and define new spaces or new ways of looking at an old space - amazing to say the least. My picture above doesn't do it justice - U have to walk within to be stunned by its sheer size and beauty. Go see it if you have time (Show ends Nov 12).

It was a Friday evening well spent.

Observation..... *huh*

I thot this might be a rather interesting way to introduce some of the "peeps" in my life.

See, this pic below is when they're NOT NORMAL.... *chuckle*

And this is how they NORMALLY are..... *LOL*

Just joking ah..... just joking.... they're really nice "peeps" lah...... REALLY.......not lying..... =)

Girle Lunch!

I have to declare Cedele Depot @ Wheelock Place - my new favourite place!!! Its got plenty of windows, so lots of natural light coming in, simple decor, and serves all-day breakfast!! Scrambled eggs, omelettes, sausages, bacon, ham, tomatoes - all tt gd stuff. *slurp* As far as I'm concerned, no place can go wrong (or bust) if they serve this sort of all day breakfast.... *uhm*

just 1 gripe - the air-conditioning's a tad warm.

This was a girlie lunch some time back, with 3 of my frens on a late Saturday morning - its Oaties' and t's hands on their sandwiches at the corner of the picture.... their idea, but a gd one too! =)

Frida

I realise that I've never really talked abt the dancing!!

Lindy Hop - the love of my dancing life since 2002, I think. I'm quite a dance slut when it comes to most things Lindy Hop - I rarely can resist a dance (except perhaps if the guy smells, or if he has a proven potential for wrangling off my right arm). Lindy Hop's a form of swing dancing, probably the Hip Hop of the 1920s & 30s, high energy (most of the time) and incredibly fun. You dance with a partner, to big band swing music. A lot of my (other) friends have said it looks a lot like tap dancing.

Since I started lindy hoppin', I've grown to be a HUGE fan of Frida Segerdahl (in picture: she's the one on the extreme left), a member of theSwedish group, the
Harlem Hot Shots. She is the epitome of cool, and when she dances, you pay attention. Simply AMAZING. And she's not skinny, like most "sam-po" dancers I've seen. She has a little belly, and wears it loud and proud - Gotta admire that! Found a clip of her in Youtube at the recent Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown (ULHS) in Minnesota (sorry, tried to blog the clip, but couldn't for some reason...). She paired up with Skye (another cool guy), and I swear is a uber cool couples performance! And of course, they came in first in that category.....

And along the lines of ULHS, I kinda like
Todd & Naomi's performance too - Naomi's an excellent performer. I couldn't stop staring at her gorgeous dress in this performance though, and how the skirt just twirls so beautifully...... *sigh* need to get rid of my thunder thighs......

Aftermath of IMF

So, now that the IMF meetings are finally over, and Singapore can be Singapore once again, rather than be limited by a year like "Singapore 2006", the average unpretentious Singaporean life can resume. Finally.

Oh, but as small momento, they didn't remove the pots of flowers they've so shamelessly transplanted to make green Singapore look even more green...... *roll eyes* there are rows of dying sunflowers on the other end - those tt haven't already been sniped off by boyfriends who are too stingy to buy flowers for their girlfriends that is! =P

An occasion to remember. indeed.
